The Maldives are a double string of islands to the southwest of the Indian coast, consisting of almost 1200 islands on 26 atolls, or coral reefs. They are the highest points of the mostly-underwater Chagos-Maldives-Laccadive Ridge. Fewer than 200 of the islands are permanently occupied, and the rest are vacation spots or are used for farming, fishing or other economic activities.
This beautiful group of islands has almost always been a self-governing nation, although in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was a British protectorate. After the Maldives became fully independent in 1965, they became a popular holiday destination. It’s no wonder that the islands are popular with visitors; they offer beautiful white sand beaches and serene lagoons for swimming. Because of the underwater atolls, the Maldives are also a scuba divers dream, full of beautiful and exotic species of underwater life. They are a truly ideal destination for a diving holiday, and live-aboard diving vacations are especially popular.
Diving in the Maldives
Divers love to explore the Maldives’ underwater islands, or thilas. Each thila has ridges and channels, where the current is unusually strong, and those areas have the most interesting and varied sea life. The most popular atolls for diving are:
- Ari Atoll, in the western area of the Maldives
- North Male Atoll, near the capital city and convenient to many island resorts
- Addu Atoll, which has a large shipwreck, the British Loyalty, to explore
The exciting opportunities for exploration and discovery are one reason why many divers return again and again for Maldives holidays.
Live-aboard Diving Holidays in the Maldives

A liveaboard vacation in the Maldives can be rough-and-ready, or it can combine diving and discovery with relaxation and luxury. Imagine living on a beautiful yacht with a spacious and comfortable cabin and gourmet food provided by a chef. Dive during the day, and lay on the deck and stargaze in the evening with a fruity cocktail or a lovely glass of wine in hand.
